The firebox and backplate of our Barclay 0-4-0

Day long steam locomotive driving experience courses are offered by the Railway, at a cost of £249.00 per day per person.

The course includes a whole day on the railway, starting with the preparation of the loco - cleaning and lighting up the steam loco and 'oiling round'. You will have the chance to get used to the engine on a siding, before taking it on a full round trip from Brechin to Bridge of Dun and back, either driving or firing. On return, the two trainees (driver experience courses operate with two persons per course) will swap positions on the footplate for another trip down the line.

Lunch is cooked the traditional way - on the locomotive shovel! Tea and coffee is provided, but you must supply your own workwear - either old clothes or overalls and a stout pair of (preferably steel toecapped) boots. Our courses represent good value for money. Hopefully you will be so pleased with the experience you will come back to volunteer for work here!
