The Magdalen Chapel Relay

Magdalene Chapel is a cutting on the Caledonian Railway about half a mile long, and the point where the main Brechin - Montrose road crosses the railway on a bridge. There has always been a drainage problem here with water running off the surrounding fields and springs bubbling up underneath the trackbed.
.

Left: George Watson's JCB scours the trackbed ready to receive new sleepers and ballast. The spoil is loaded into the side-tipping mermaid wagon, which is then taken up the line behind our 48hp Ruston diesel and tipped down a  bankside.

Right: Once the trackbed is cleared, new 60ft track panels are made up at Bridge of Dun and brought to Magladen chapel on a flat wagon. They can they be craned into position with our 12 ton rail crane. We believe this is the largest rail crane in Scotland!

Perhaps you are interested in helping us with track repairs? It's a lot cheaper than joining a gym! The p-way gang meets at Bridge of Dun about 9.30am every Sunday the trains are not operating. New hands are always welcome. Call Kenny Joy if you are thinking about attending, on (01356) 622365 evenings, or (01674) 672489 during the day.
