Schools' day: - left: crowded station and Mike Thompson looking pleased. The water pump he's carrying must actually have a full petrol tank for a change!

23/06/2003: Schools day last week unfortunately saw a slight drop in numbers of children, due to budget cuts for school trips. However, this was more than made up for by the number of parties from nursing homes received and a healthy profit was generated. The evening saw a railway quiz night at the Caledonian Hotel (across from the station) and the railway's team managed a respectable third place!

17/06/2003: The Princes Trust have been making inroads with landscaping at Bridge of Dun. The group, who are all Arbroath-based volunteers, have been removing the weed-ridden topsoil on the centre platforms, putting down polythene (Donated from Don & Low of Forfar) and chippings on top of that. All the flowerbeds have been tended and new plants installed (thanks to Trinity Garden Centre, Brechin) and the station looks the best it has for many a year. Dave Lawson took the above pictures on Sunday, and work should be completed this week.

12/06/2003: Dave Lawson has sponsored a player at division 2 champions Brechin City in the name of the railway. Brechin City have gone from strength to strength in recent seasons and we wish them all the very best as they take on the big boys in division one. See: http://www.brechincity.co.uk/players/index.html

Our Dutch friends at
Vereniging Historische Militaria who visited us for "Front Line Branch Line" have an excellent gallery of photographs (see above) of the event on their website, see http://www.livinghistory.nl/recentevents/recentevents.html and follow the Brechin link. It seems they were doing their best to encourage Anglo-Dutch relations at Brechin British Legion on Saturday night ;-)

02/06/2003:  Our recent Special event "Front Line Branch Line" is now over. I have created a photogallery of the event, to view it please click below, or on the images:

27/05/2003: Peckett 0-4-0ST no. 2084 (above) has now arrived on the railway and has spent the last few days undergoing trials on the line. Most of the engine's motion (the moving parts) is new, and as it has never run a great distance since restoration it is important to 'run it in'. Your webmaster spent a happy day on light engine proving runs to Bridge of Dun yesterday, and pleasingly all seems to be well. This weekend sees the Front Line Branch Line event, and will see the loco on its first public passenger trains ever!

As you can see from a new entry in the guestbook, the buffet car has a new manageress from Sunday. Mary assures us we can look forward to our first Michelin Star shortly.......watch out Jamie Oliver!

Above right: A very poor quality picture, but one which proves the arrival of Peckett no. 2048, seen in the shed at Brechin.

16/05/2003: Angus Council has gifted us the use of the old meal shop on the High Street in order to display Thomas the Tank Engine paraphernalia.

13/05/2003:   Further pictures of the diesel gala, taken from the diesel group website. Left, D5314 runs round at Brechin and (below) 25083 makes a rare appearance in the daylight. This loco is currently being rebuilt by the diesel group.

06/5/03

A sunny bank holiday and a reasonable turnout for the diesel-hauled services on Sunday and Monday. Meanwhile, work has continued on the carriages where Mark 1 4676 is now nearly re-upholstered and George and Ramsay have been sanding down Mark 2 5188 ready for a repaint. Dave Lawson has the week off work and is spending his holiday at Bridge of Dun (where else?) replacing the rubber seals around BSK 34539's gangway. Still on coaches, Mike Jackson has constructed an amazing chimney from 'Chez Joy', the volunteer accommodation coach. We are slightly worried this may be mistaken for a weapon of mass destruction should George Bush choose to holiday in Brechin. Mike Watson and Steve Pegg spent Saturday de-chairing the 100 sleepers donated by Jarvis Rail, and those not suitable for re-use in the railway line are now on sale at £8 each.

Japanese Film Crew at Brechin with steam crew (& webmaster) Simon Hickman

30/4/03

On Sunday we were visited by a Japanese film crew, some of whom are seen above, who are making a programme for Fuji TV in Japan. Our lack of Japanese prevented us from grasping what exactly the film was about(!) but they spent some time filming around the station while the little Barclay provided some atmosphere! While some of us (me) were swanning around pretending to be film stars, however, less vain volunteers were tidying up Bridge of Dun's centre platform as part of a concerted effort to get it fit for passenger use by the summer.
