Jarvis Rail have donated us a substantial amount of concrete troughing (useful for open drains and electrical cable) plus a quantity of secondhand chaired wooden sleepers. These are seen being offloaded at Brechin from Doug Mitchell's lorries, onto bogie bolster wagons. Thanks to David Crabb for sourcing the materials in the first place.

A busy Easter weekend saw trains top and tailed by the 0-4-0 Barclay and Class 11 12093, seen above. We received some good news today when the boiler inspector (him again!) gave Harlaxton's boiler the all clear for a re-tube. The boiler is now bereft of old tubes and washed out, so tubes will be ordered this week.

15/04/2003  Left: Barclay 0-4-0 steam raising for tomorrow's services. Note Harlaxton's boiler on the wagon behind, newly painted in Aluminium paint. Above: Blue type 2s at Brechin. 27024 still requires numbers, logos and final touching up.

Left: The class 27 receives a rubdown prior to a repaint.

With the impending opening of the railway this weekend, everyone is busy making the stations presentable. Jim Wilkie has cleaned all the coaches, and Mike Jackson washed out Brechin station. Meanwhile, the diesel group have begun repainting 27024 (above) into BR blue for the Diesel Gala on 4th / 5th May. New member Derek is busy repainting the cab interior of the class 11, while Steve Pegg has now got most of the tubes out of Harlaxton's boiler in preparation for its re-tube. Tommy Henderson has been polishing Peckett 2153's journals ready for its re-wheeling.

The work parties from Noranside Prison have been making inroads into the back catalogue of maintenance jobs - the front garden looks the best it has done for years, concrete repairs to the platforms are in hand and Harlaxton's boiler is undergoing a repaint.

Left: Barclay 0-4-0 catches the last rays of the sun at Brechin while raising steam in order for the safety valves to be set. These valves lift when the boiler pressure reaches 160 pounds per square inch (PSI) which is maximum pressure for this engine.

Lots of activity this week on the railway. (Left) Harlaxton has been stripped of all its boiler cladding ready for the boiler barrel to be coated in heat-resistant paint. (Above right) the Magalen Chapel relay is now complete bar final ballasting. The ballast on the right covers a new drain, which should solve the moisture problem in this cutting.

31/3/03 Bye bye DMU....This unit has been bought by
Class 107 Ltd and is off to the Embsay Steam Railway

Left: Harlaxton's boiler was craned out on Saturday, and is seen here outside Brechin shed on a weltrol wagon. All the boiler cladding and insulation must now come off to allow the boiler inspector a good look at the exterior of the boiler barrel. About half the tubes are now out, and once the rest are out too the boiler inspector will come in and give it the 'once-over'. It will then be painted in aluminium paint, re-clad and re-tubed before being re-united with the loco frames.

Left: wheelsets of Peckett 2153 in the car park at Brechin. These will be placed in the shed by JCB, in order to carry out polishing work on the journals. One axle is already complete.

We have started a new partnership with HM Prison Noranside (by Brechin),  whereby inmates on day-release can come to the railway and help out with odd jobs. At present one inmate, Tony, is doing a great job with tidying the front gardens.
