These applications (available for French, German and English) enable students whose awareness of formal syntactic relationships is weak or non-existent to explore, expand and test their knowledge of such relationships within the framework of a series of relatively simple texts.
GramDef programs also aim to teach basic grammatical terminology in the target language, so that classroom and personal study of the foreign language can be pursued in the language, with little or no recourse to the mother tongue. Manual included.
In 'Explore' mode, the student can click on any word in a text to call up a description of the part of speech to which it belongs and of its relationship with the words around it.
In 'Test' mode, the student selects a word and is then asked to choose from a succession of up to six drop-down lists to define the word and its relationships. An informal score is kept.
An InfoGram grammar help file provides information on all the grammatical categories included, and when called up, defaults to the most relevant topic for the currently selected word.
In the English version, an extra test level is included in which the student chooses a part of speech and is then challenged to find all the instances of it in the text.
The package is a very useful self-study tool for many groups, for example:
- Native speakers of English preparing for English language school examinations, particularly post-16.
- Teachers, particularly in the Primary sector, whose grammatical knowledge is incomplete.
- Teachers who teach EFL or student teachers who are preparing to do so.
- Foreign learners of English who wish to formalise their grammatical perceptions of English.
